Mixed Cellulose Esters (MCE) membranes are a general purpose filter used in many applications for the microbiological examination of water, wastewater, pharmaceuticals, food, and beverages and air monitoring. MCE membranes offer high recovery rates and superior flow rates. Non-sterile membranes are bulk packed or in 10-pack autoclavable envelopes.

Contrasting grid lines facilitate counting colonies/particles and are tested to assure freedom from grid line inhibition.  3.1mm squares represent 1/100 of the filtration area of a 47mm diameter filter (9.6cm2). Black and Green membranes provide a contrasting background for counting light colored particulates and help to minimize eye fatigue.

Advantec membranes were developed and are manufactured to comply with the ASTM and the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.  Membrane specifications and lot number are printed on each filter's envelope.  Quality control tests are performed on each lot and QA Certificates are available.

Key Features

  • Composition: Mixed cellulose esters including cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate, also known as nitro-cellulose
  • High porosity provides superior low rates
  • High protein binding can be blocked by pretreatment or utilized in applications
  • High purity: Triton-free
  • Autoclavable: Withstands autoclaving temperatures up to 130 degree C without adversely affecting bubble point.
  • flow rate or microbiological recovery
  • Rapid wettings time <3 seconds to wet a 47 mm diameter disc with aqueous 1% methylene blue
  • Pore size: 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 , 0.45, 0.65, 0.8, 1, 3, and 5um
  • Diameter: 13 mm, 25 mm, 37mm, 47mm, 90 mm, 142 mm, and 293 mm.

Typical Application

  • Standard membranes for many laboratory applications including filter sterilizing biological fluids, micron-biology, contamination analysis and air monitoring
  • Gridded filters available for quantifying microbial growth.
  • Available non-sterile or sterilized by ethylene oxide (EtO)
  • Can be transparentized to view collected particles

    • Using compatible liquid (immersion oil, toluene) OR
    • Select Opticlear membranes for the "hot bock" acetone vapor method
